This discipline uses mathematical and statistical methods and algorithms to make optimal decisions and solve complex problems in the management and operation of systems. Its main aim is to find efficient and effective solutions to optimization problems involving limited resources and multiple constraints.
The goal is to use mathematical models to represent real-world problems. These models may include linear, nonlinear, integer or stochastic equations that describe the relationships among the variables of the problem. Then, a relevant objective is focused on the optimization of some objective function, which could maximize benefits, minimize costs, reduce time, or improve efficiency. Techniques such as linear programming, nonlinear programming, dynamic programming, and genetic algorithms are used to find optimal solutions. Operations Research supports organizations in making informed decisions based on data and models. This can involve analyzing trade-offs among different options, assessing risks, and forecasting future outcomes.
